Final Fantasy Dungeon Ale

I probably spent more time on Final Fantasy for Nintendo than any other game for that platform. I could not beat Chaos, the final boss. I grinded daily, eventually weekly, finally monthly to upgrade my characters. I just could not get them strong enough to beat the game. Then one fateful summer, I went and visited my parents and my little half brother who was six years younger than me. And Joey, my youngest sibling, deleted my saved game. So ultimately, I never beat it. I’ve beaten other versions of the game, but the original proved too hard and time consuming. None-the-less, it was anRead More →

Hayabusa

The Hazy IPA preferred by ninjas everywhere. Ryu agrees. This beer is our first attempt at a Hazy IPA, and we are planning to enter it into the 6th Anniversary brew competition at Bakfish Brewery. Original Gravity: 1.060 Final Gravity: 1.017 ABV: 5.64%                                                                                    Read More →

Tecmo Bowl

Arguably the best football video game ever made… Tecmo Bowl and Super Tecmo Bowl brought the gridiron straight into your living room. I loved playing as the Houston Oilers using Warren Moon at the helm. Of course, it was impossible to stop the Raiders and Bo Jackson. This beer is our first attempt at a Hazy IPA, and we are planning to enter it into the 6th Anniversary brew competition at Bakfish Brewery. Original Gravity: 1.073 Final Gravity: 1.017 ABV: 7.35%                                                 Read More →

Paper Boy

Dodge a dog, hop a fence, fire a newspaper through a window, and get chased down the street by an old woman in curlers. Who didn’t like the paperboy adventure?! Let this porter take you on a journey of caramel and malt with a nice pecan finish. Check out this 1984 Nintendo Paperboy commercial. Pre-boil Gravity: 1.032 Original Gravity: 1.061 Final Gravity: 1.016 ABV:5.91%                                                                                   Read More →

Links Hyrule Lawnmower

Yes, the logo is an ode to St. Arnold’s Fancy Lawnmower… and it crosses over with my favorite video game series of all time, Zelda. Link was a master at collecting rupees in the tall grasses surrounding the Hyrule Kingdom. With this recipe, we’ve collected lots of hoppy flavors in this American Ale. It “could” be classified as a pale, however, the CaraRed gave it a darker color and the hops provide such as bitterness, that it really is not a pale ale. None-the-less… pull up a friend and enjoy a cold one together because – it’s dangerous to go it alone. Original Gravity: 1.060Read More →

Dr. Mario

a.k.a. Dr. Mario’s Artemisia Absinthium Elixer or Wormwood Beer for short. This beer is an experimental. Coming out of one of Bakfish’s homebrew challenges, we were each given grab bags of ingredients from Hopping Grape Homebrew Supply. My grab bag contents included: 5 lbs. of Unmalted Wheat 1 lb. of Double Roasted Crystal 1 oz of Galena Hops 1 oz of Callista Hops 1 bag of Artemisia Absinthium / Wormwood Herb When I opened the bag, I have to admit, I was kind of excited by the double roasted crystal grains and hops selections… but then I saw the wormwood. What the hell is “wormwood.”Read More →

Poppin' Wheelies

Originally released in 1984, Excitebike featured 10 courses of logs, jumps, and turbo pads to motocross. You had to watch your temperature to prevent over heating, and if you fell off your bike, you likely had to Frogger your way back across the field of competitors. We watched our temperatures on this beer and may have fermented a bit on the high end, but we’re looking forward to this hopped up brew. Recipe is for 10 gallon batch. Translation: Raccoon Tail Beer… a.k.a. Tanooki’s Mexican Lager. Sure Mario was Italian, but we’re pretty sure he celebrated Cinco De Mayo in his Tanooki suit because he loves to party. Dress it up with a little salt and lime, and take off and fly with this lager tinted in Mittelfruh and Motueka hops. This lager was brewed at the Hopping Grape birthday celebration for Keith Brooks and will be entered into the Cinco De Mayo homebrew competition hosted by Galveston Bay Brewing… we didn’t win, but we had fun brewing! Pre-Boil Gravity: 1.041 Original Gravity: 1.051 Final Gravity: Currently Fermenting ABV: ??       Read More →

Translation: Fire Breath Beer… a.k.a. Bowsers’s Mexican Lager. Bowser is blowing up Cinco De Mayo by adding a little spice to Tanooki’s Mexican Lager. This recipe is the same as Cerveza De La Cola De Mapache, as we split it and added some heat. This lager was brewed at the Hopping Grape birthday celebration for Keith Brooks and will be entered into the Cinco De Mayo homebrew competition hosted by Galveston Bay Brewing… we didn’t win, but we had fun brewing! The Bakfish Homebrew Club’s 2nd attempt at an experimental beer. This time, it is a Mexican Beer that is not a traditional Mexican Beer. You must attempt to think outside the box, and the delivery date is Cinco De Mayo! So we’re brewing our first SMASH beer and cheating while doing it. For those who have never heard of a SMASH, it stands for “Single Malt” and “Single Hop.” The purpose of a smash is to highlight the one hop and grain combination and not overly complicate a recipe. For this brew, we are using American Pale Ale grain and Azacca hops. But here isRead More →
